Newcrest was a reputable company where I could get experience in hard rock metalliferous mining and, most importantly, the mine was easy to get to and in a very pleasant setting.
I’d never worked on an open pit before, so Cadia was a huge contrast to my previous experience. My main project was logging drill core for a Ridgeway deposit, which was really satisfying because you see results so quickly. I also spent some time underground and with drillers on a drill rig and even hitched a few rides on the massive trucks you see on site.
One of the best parts about the Program was meeting the other Vac Program students. I shared a place with two others and we generally made the most of life at Cadia with BBQs, parties and fishing trips.
The Vacation Program was a very positive experience for me and I was keen to start a career with Newcrest. I’m now on the Graduate Program and looking forward to developing as much as experience as I can.
