Graduate Selection Process
Once you've applied for our Program it's important to understand how our graduate selection process works. Click on the links for a more detailed explanation of each step.
You may also want to check out the links below for useful hints and tips on making a successful job application:
Step 1: Apply Online
You'll need to apply online via our website. We'll ask you to complete our online application form and upload a cover letter, current CV and a copy of your academic transcript.
Step 2: Applications Reviewed
Our team will review your application to see if you're suitable for the Program. This stage will take into consideration your academic results (65% and above), the relevance of your tertiary qualification, your involvement in extra curricular activities, including sport, memberships and community based activities and work experience and, importantly, your willingness to work in regional/remote locations.
Step 3: Occupational Appraisals Completed Online
If your application meets our requirements, we'll contact you about the next stage of our selection process. You will be asked to complete three online occupational appraisals which will assess how well you meet the requirements of the graduate role and whether the Newcrest culture will be a good fit for you. The three appraisals cover:
1. Abilities Testing
This will cover your capabilities in three areas:• Verbal Critical Reasoning assesses your ability to understand written passages and the logically evaluate an argument.
Assessing your ability to understand written passages and the logically evaluate an argument.
• Numerical Reasoning Evaluates your understanding of statistical tables and numerical data and your ability to make logical deductions from them.
• Abstract Reasoning Measures your problem solving capacity, potential to learn and acquire new skills, versatility of thinking, and capacity to solve problems outside your immediate practical experience and training.
2. Work Readiness
You'll complete a questionnaire with a range of scenarios to assess your capacity to take responsibility/ownership for problems as well as your ability to influence, lead, resolve conflicts, negotiate and deal with interpersonal differences.
3. Personality Assessment
This is where we evaluate a range of key success factors, such as your ability to adapt to change, your potential to take on higher roles, your ability to influence and accommodate differences, as well a range of other important predictive criteria for future success.
Step 4: First Round Interviews
If you're successful following the occupational appraisals, you'll be invited to an interview at a capital city location. This interview will be behaviour-based which means two members of the Newcrest team will ask you to give specific examples of your experiences as a way of predicting your ability to handle the requirements of the job.
You will be required to provide original academic transcripts. These will be photocopied and returned to you.
Step 5: Second Round Interviews Onsite
Your second round interview will be conducted at one of our operations, or for capital city based roles at the proposed location of work. We'll make all necessary arrangements and cover the cost for your travel and accommodation if required.
A site interview will involve a comprehensive site tour and a formal interview of about an hour with the department manager of your discipline and a site HR representative.
This stage of the process is designed to ensure that you feel as comfortable with us as we do with you. We provide opportunities for you to meet with our friendly team, see our working environment and facilities, and make your assessment of whether the 'fit' is right for you.
Step 6: Job Offer
If your application has been successful we'll call you and make a verbal offer of employment. You will be provided with a copy of the letter of offer within 24 – 48 hours of your verbal offer. You'll be given 7 business days in which to accept your offer and return your signed contract.
Your contract will be subject to successful completion of a medical check and police clearance. This means that you can sign your letter now and we can schedule you in for your medical examination once your exams are over.
The medical examination aims to:
- Ensure you can safely undertake the job without putting yourself or others at risk of illness or injury.
- Ensure that you can work safely and are not likely to be affected by illegal or inappropriate drug use.
- Establish baseline health data to assist with subsequent health monitoring.
By law you must tell us about all pre-existing injuries or illnesses that may be affected by the job you are applying for. If you do not disclose all relevant information you may not be entitled to worker's compensation if the job aggravates a pre-existing injury or illness.
We try to take your first preference into account when determining your job location, but our business requirements will also play a large role in where your first placement will be. Our Program involves two 12-month placements so you should be prepared to move after your first year.
Our graduates typically start in January of each year, but if you've graduated mid-semester or just want to take an extended break prior to starting with us, we'll work with you to agree a mutually convenient start date.
